Read, think, verify, think again, post

Some time ago I came across this news. If you are too lazy to read it, it's about a man wrong labeled as pedo on facebook. The poor bloke had to go to the police station to clear his name and was rightly traumatized.

As I read this news, I pride myself in my ethical sharing. In this day and age, a lot of people wanted to be live reporters - the first to report something, others may want it for the 'likes'. I don't do it for the above. When I do share things I do it for 2 reasons.

  • I need to bookmark it for future reference.
  • I want my family members/close friends to read it.
And so, recently I saw a post about poison baby food and got a shock it looked like those baby snacks Horsey eats, so I quickly re-post this on my wall for my sister as I know she will read it. The next thing I know, my sister in law private-messaged me and asked me to take down that post. It was a hoax.

I was rightly mortified. It happens the baby snacks is under my sister in law's company and coincidentally she was on the panel that is investigating this and they want to take legal action on it. So I apologized and took it down. I had also broke one of my cardinal rules of internet surfing. Verify before communicate. It's a good wake up call to remind myself not to take Facebook seriously.

It could very well be Fakebook. You could very well be the next clueless cohort that unwittingly defamed someone. I am still pretty peeved I didn't check before I post. Put it down to too many OT lately.

Need sleep.
